Hydration, the Primary Nutrient

Water is essential to life.

When it comes nutrition, we stress the importance of vitamins, minerals and carbohydrates. These nutrients are undoubtedly important for our health, but there is a foundational element which is often overlooked: water. But not all water hydrates our body.

Hydration is the primary nutrient that determines our health and nutrition.

Our bodies are made up of two-thirds water…

Water makes up 99% all molecules in the human body. H2O plays a vital role in nearly all physiological processes, including regulating body temperatures, digesting and metabolizing foods, facilitating nutrient transportation, and supporting cell function. Water is essential for the absorption of nutrients and optimal cell function.

In its simplest form, water is a fundamental component for not just sustaining but also enhancing our vitality.

Many people are chronically under-hydrated, despite its importance. We often overlook the importance of hydration as we seek energy boosts through caffeinated, sugary drinks and energy drinks. Yet nothing compares to the pure, revitalizing essence of water.

Another important aspect to take into consideration is that not all water is equally hydrating. Both water contamination and purification alter the molecular structure of the water and its chemistry. This changes the way the water interacts with our bodies. Purification can dehydrate water if it removes essential minerals. Some purification methods like reverse osmosis or distillation are very effective in removing contaminants, but they also remove beneficial minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium. These minerals are essential for maintaining electrolyte and hydration balance in the body. Water may not be absorbed as well by the body without them, leading to dehydration even with increased water intake. To prevent dehydration, it's important to ensure that the purified water contains necessary minerals. Water with a high mineral or pH (alkaline content) may not provide our bodies with the hydration they need.

Hydration is more than just quenching thirst. It is about nurturing each cell in our body.

In the modern world, achieving hydration is a science with a lot of contradictory information. With the right steps, it can be a powerful tool to reclaim wellness. All of our cells work optimally when we are adequately hydrated. Our skin will glow, our energy will soar, and our mental acuity will sharpen. We feel a greater sense of vitality and vibrancy.

Neglecting to hydrate can cause dehydration and a cascade negative effects. Fatigue, decreased concentration and physical performance are all signs of dehydration. Even mild dehydration affects mood and cognitive function, making us feel lethargic and cranky. Dehydration can cause inflammation, which can lead to various illnesses.

Prioritizing hydration is a great way to unlock the potential of our body. We can get the most out of our food, health and wellness. Water is more than a beverage. It is the elixir for life. Staying hydrated allows us to tap into an endless sea of potential. This is why hydration is the primary nutrient.

Stay tuned for more lessons on proper hydration!
